Two Interpretations of Decimal Division

Creating story problems using two different approaches to division.


We can apply the two interpretations of division for whole numbers and for fractions to decimals.

1. Write a “how many groups?” story problem for 0.45 ÷ 3.15.

2. Write a “how many/much in one group?” story problem for 0.45 ÷ 3.15.

3. Which interpretation seems easier to make a story problem for decimal division where the divisor is bigger than the dividend? Which interpretation seems easier to make a story problem where the divisor is smaller than the dividend in decimal division? Explain each of your choices.
